I need permission

Fall.

My favorite season of the year here in the southern portion of the U S of  A.  Why?  Because it gets chilly, but not unbearable to the point where I have to bundle up like an Eskimo on ice and constantly have to double-check for snot-sickles.  Because people crank up their dusty old fireplaces and the smell in the air trickles down the block bringing back memories of childhood days of ease and happiness and holiday festivities to look forward to.

Given that it is early November, I’ve decided to give myself permission to start over a new.

Permission to eat healthier.  I started out strong in January and fell off the bandwagon a few months ago in the midst of my marathon training.  Just because I’ve given in to the drudgery of running mile after mile each week does not give me permission to eat endless bounds of chocolate, pizza and tacos.  Carbs are good for runners.  Carbs are not good for my dress size and ego.

Permission to wake up on the bright side.  I have a first date this evening and while there comes pangs of anxiety and what-ifs, there also comes a hope of starting something fresh and uninhibited.  Let’s all dig into our athletic bags and throw a Hail Mary pass that this date does not end up being chronicled in one of my worst first dates ever series.  Remember the guy who left me at the restaurant alone after ditching on both the date and the tab?  Or the guy who had scary weapons of mass destruction in his truck?

Permission to let go of the omnipresent feelings of anxiety.  Just because my life is busy and I worry does not give me permission to fret over every single decision and scare.

Permission to start listening to holiday music.  Because I can and damn, I do love me some John Denver and the Muppets Christmas album.  You can’t tell me you don’t love bolting out along with Miss Piggy’s solo raving about piggy  figgy pudding?  Say it ain’t so?

Permission to live out loud.  Because let’s face it, why shouldn’t I?  Katy Perry and Nikki Minaj do it, thus so can I.  Sans the bad blue hair and trashy tutus.

And what’s the sense in starting things a new on January 1 when there is no reason not to start now?

  1. I really really love this post. It's so wise. I'll be sending all kinds of good energy your way for the first date. And hold up--did you say MARATHON TRAINING? Whaaaaat? Like a full on marathon? OMG girl.

Emile Zola's quote "If you ask me what I came into this life to do, I will tell you: I came to live out loud" is one of my very favorite mantras and is framed in my house. :)

  3. YES HOLIDAY MUSIC!!!

I've been on 6 first dates since I moved here and omg, ugh. I go on a few (thanks OKCupid) and then get fed up, and then a few weeks later I get bored/lonely and go on a few more, and now I'm at another UGH phase. Two have become semi-friends, but the others were so not worth it. I have yet to meet anyone who was even worth getting in my car for, so. Good luck to you and me both! ;)

  4. Excellent!!!

Sometimes we all need to give ourselves permissions to love and support ourselves...ridiculous to think we even have to these days...but a reminder to do so is never a bad thing.

    Enjoy your date!!!!
